Windows 10 (FAQ & INFO)
0
A thread to discuss Windows 10

  • Add Tips For users here
  • Add info you discover and cool stuff (etc)

Recommended software
  • Windows 7 Genuine Disc... failing that.....

Recommended actions
  • Install Win7
  • Activate
[*] Fully Update
[*] GWX should be showing in the Taskbar

You can now install Win10 using the media Creation Tool]Media Creation Tool
- If not ... Register for Windows 10 Update
[*] Download and install Windows 10
[*](IF the update doesn't work grab the media Creation Tool), Create ISO and Install Win 10)

Optional:

- Just in case your 'worried' about your current Key, you can always check a key with MS services, or even create a new
[*]Run Produkey (A naughty, but useful, piece of software that reports back all your CD keys; be careful with this and make the usual Firewall block, uninstall after use, run AV)
[*] Grab Windows 10 Key from produkey and hit "change product key" in windows
- Change product key is found by Right clicking "This PC" and choosing Properties
- **Note: We are not changing the Key, just checking its genuine and activated!
[*] It should simply check (not change) the key and say "Product is now genuine"

At this point you may want to turn off the 10 thousand extra apps and pointless crap and spying tools that MS have added:

[*] Hop into "MSCONFIG" and sort out your startup software and running programs.
[*] Change all your settings and perosnal prefences etc
[*] Windows 10 for me runs using approx 2.2GB RAM and boots faster than any other OS Smile
[*] Do this on as many HDD's as you can and store them until July 2016 (Windows 10 will then be priced at least 100$)
[*] Desktop Backgrounds can be changed here: "C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows"
[/list]

Disable Cortana:
Cortana and other stuff function from this location:
"C:\Windows\SystemApps"
- Temporarily disable services from running using the task manager
- Then...
- Quickly change the name of the folder:
"C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy.old"
- I added ".old" to test it out.
- You lose the search function (obviously) but it was just a test for users who wish to do similar, especially with all this advertisement and spying crap.

** The only one i left active was this:
"ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy"

Playing Old Microsoft Games:
Some posts have been made online about downloading a hacked version of "Microsoft Games", i wouldn't recommend this.
  • Windows XP Microsoft games can be Ported directly to Windows 10 easily (without modifications)
  • Windows 7 Games can ONLY be ported from a 32bit OS, these require HeX editing.

Quote:To do this you'll need the following:

    1. The Microsoft Games folder from C:\Program Files - This needs to be from a 32 bit version of Windows 7 even if you're using a 64 bit version of Windows 8
    2. The cardgames.dll file from Windows\System32 - Again, from a 32 bit version of Windows 7.
    2. A Hex Editor - Get a good free, no install program, from Free Hex Editor XVI32

    Procedure:

    1. Make a copy of the game file you wish to modify. Example SpiderSolitaire.exe - Found in the Microsoft Games\SpiderSolitaire folder
    2. Open XVI32
    3. Select File/Open and navigate to your Microsoft Games\SpiderSolitaire folder
    4. Select SpiderSolitaire.exe
    5. Open Search and enter 7D 04 83 65 FC 00 33 C0 83 7D FC 01 0F 94 C0 (copy and paste)
    6. Select 7D and select Edit/Overwrite String
    7. In the dialogue box, make sure Hex String is selected and type EB
    8. Select OK
    9. Select File/Save
    10. Copy cardgames.dll to the Microsoft Games\SpiderSolitaire folder
    11. Copy the Microsoft Games folder to your Windows 8 Program Files (x86) folder
    12. Play.

Notes:
  • You get 30 days to revert back to Windows 7
  • Be careful with your backups and files
  • Games with Securom may cause issues and DRM issues may occur with older games (i have experienced this, but i now have all my games running standalone)

    * quoted from a website available online (Untested, i do not have access to a32bit os atm, but i will do by tomorrow)
Enjoy Smile

Updated Post number 1
- The installation of Win10 is now improved/ easier with the Media Creation Tool

Part 2:
* Clean Install Windows 10

Users who have Upgraded to Windows 10 can now proceed to performing a "Clean Install"
If you used DazLoader 1.6.9 for Win7 you can uninstall it

Clean Install
* Re-boot your PC with the Windows 10 CD in the drive
* Re-install for Windows 10 for the second time, removing all traces of your old Windows 7 and the 1st Win10 Install.
  • Will remain activated because it is tied to your MotherBoard
  • Will be less than 50GB
  • a 1TB harddrive can have 20 copies of Windows 10 on it Smile
(each with it's own CD key)
  • (these can be cloned to other harddrives and should work in any PC)
